Cookie Policy

1. The short version
BookB uses essential cookies only — the small number needed to sign you in and keep forms secure. We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or any tracking on this site. The one place a third party is involved is the checkout page, where PayPal's payment components may set cookies of their own to complete the payment you have asked for and to prevent fraud (section 4). That is also why you do not see a cookie consent banner here: UK law (PECR) only requires consent for cookies that are not strictly necessary. We set none of those, and the cookies at checkout are there to carry out the payment you have asked us to take.
2. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser so it can recognise you between page loads — for example, to remember that you are signed in. Cookies set by the site you are visiting are "first-party" cookies; cookies set by other companies through that site are "third-party" cookies. BookB itself sets only first-party cookies, and the only place a third party can set one is the checkout page, where PayPal's payment components run.
3. The cookies we set
- Session cookie (name beginning bookb_session or similar) — keeps you signed in as you move around the site. Expires when your session ends.
- CSRF token (XSRF-TOKEN) — a security cookie that protects forms against cross-site request forgery. Short-lived.
- Remember-me cookie (name beginning remember_web) — set only if you tick "remember me" when signing in, so you stay signed in on your own device. You can remove it by signing out.
All of these are strictly necessary for the service to work; none of them track you across other websites, build a profile of you, or serve advertising.
4. Payments
PayPal is our payment processor, and the only one. When you pay, PayPal's payment components load into our checkout page — the PayPal, card, Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons there are PayPal's rather than ours, which is why your card details never reach BookB. PayPal may set cookies of its own on that page for fraud prevention and to make the payment work, and on devices that offer Google Pay the page also loads Google's Google Pay script, which may do the same. Those are third-party cookies, governed by PayPal's and Google's own privacy and cookie policies rather than this one. They appear only on the checkout page, and only because taking your payment safely depends on them.
5. Fonts
Every page loads its two typefaces from Google Fonts. Google Fonts does not set cookies, but your browser's request for the font files tells Google your IP address and which page asked for them. We mention it because it is the only other thing on the site your browser fetches from anyone but us.
6. Managing cookies
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time — every major browser lets you clear cookies for a single site or all sites, and most can block cookies entirely. Be aware that if you block BookB's essential cookies, you will not be able to sign in or buy books, because those functions depend on them.
7. If this changes
If we ever introduce non-essential cookies — for example, privacy-respecting analytics — we will update this policy first and ask for your consent before setting them, as the law requires.
